Our first luncheon get-together
of 2003 was held on Saturday, January 18th at the historic Redings Mill
Inn, south of Joplin, Missouri. We had 18 folks and one junior operator
attending lunch today. There may have been snow on the ground outside,
but we had fun inside!
|
The word about the 4SQRP Group must be spreading as we had several "first timers" this month. We enjoyed visiting with you today and wish to thank you for joining our group. Hope you can participate often in 4SQRP activities.

John WØJRP and Betty Jo from Joplin attended their first FSQRP luncheon get-together today. |
John WØJRP uses this homebrew tube type QRP transmitter. It uses a 6AQ5 on 40 meters. |
Joe Porter, WØMQY demonstrated a 20 meter loop antenna that he has been working on. He has made several QRP contacts from inside his house using this loop. The antenna uses a motorized variable tuning capacitor to resonate the loop with very sharp tuning. The motor and gear assembly was salvaged from an old copy machine.

Joe, WØMQY demonstrates his 20 meter loop antenna using his Sierra station. |
A closer look at the loop's motorized tuning system. |
The loop is 33 inches in diameter and is mounted on a stand built from PVC pipe. In the photos, a gamma match is used to feed the loop. After the meeting, Joe reported that he changed the feed method to a Faraday shielded inductive coupling loop 6.5 inches in diameter made from 9913 coax.
|
Here is a view of the gamma matching assembly on Joe's loop. |
Thomas KCØAUU is at the far end of the table with Nancy NØFNZ in the right corner. Pete Banfield is on the left (black ball cap) and Ira KD5AUX is wearing the yellow cap. |
Larry Sparks NØBHU is building a low power AM transmitter for 75 meters. It's not too often we see a transmitter with a big audio chip and a modulation transformer.
|
Here is Larry NØBHU's 75 meter AM transmitter. The heat sink on the right rear is for the modulator and the final PA is on the left front. He is getting about 9 watts of carrier power output. |
Larry also built this nice double paddle. There is a pivot for each paddle arm and there is a tension spring between the arms. |
|
Getting ready for lunch. Rowena and Rex KC5UVN from Tulsa, Oklahoma are on the left front. |
Layne WDØDDU and Joe WØMQY show us their lunch. Good thing they ordered the "small" sandwich! Jim WBØIYC is passing the ketchup. |
|
Larry NØBHU on the left front with JC, K5DMI (plaid shirt) while Russ NØQLT (green cap) chats with John WØJRP (standing). |
Steve WL7YQ and his son Blake are to the left of Dale WDØGKC. |
Today we had a "white elephant" door prize drawing. The white elephants were various bit and pieces of unknown quality scavenged from the dark recesses of many ham shacks (and maybe a few dumpsters). Actually, several really nice parts found new homes. Also John, WØJRP shared many vintage issues of 73 magazine dating from the 60's and 70's. Thanks for the historic reading material John.
In addition, Jay KØETC passed out brand new two-circuit mini phone jacks to everyone for our building enjoyment. Thanks Jay!

Rex KC5UVN, Jay KØETC, Gene NØMQ, Tom N2UHC, Steve WL7YQ and Dale WDØGKC are on the left side of the table |
A table full of "white elephants". Everybody went home with some new goodies! |
Next month will be the judging of the Builders Contest on February 15th at a location to be announced. Watch the 4SQRP web site for more information. Let's hope for good weather and clear roads. See you then!
